"Biggest Pet Peeve"

On any given day, any number of stupid little things will annoy me.

Not enough to really wreck my day, but just enough for me to say, "Well that was stupid." And chances are, the next conversation I have will likely have a sentence that starts with, "Y'know what my biggest pet peeve is?"

And we all do it. And we all do it more than once, about more than one thing. So really, whatever it is isn't really our "biggest" pet peeves; it's actually one of many. And why not, there are lots of annoying little things out in the world.

So, here are some of my personal Greatest Hits of Pet Peeves. I'd rank my Top Peeves, but obviously I won't be able to think of all of them at once.

1) When someone hands you your change, and they pile all the paper bills in your hand, then dump the change on top of it.

2) Eating in my car without asking if it's ok first. Again I say: GRRRRR.

3) People who use other variations of the word "SUPPOSEDLY". Other variations, you ask? Yes, seriously. I've heard "supposingly", "supposably", and "supposively". Is it really that difficult of a word to get right? Or maybe they ARE real words! In which case, I'm peeved that my education didn't teach me this!

4) People who don't hold doors open when they're in the Radius of Closeness... like you're close enough behind them where the door would be shutting right in front of you.

5) Parking your massive SUV in the Compact Car section of the parking lot... thus using up all the decent spots that people with small cars could've used. And since you're now squeezed into a smaller spot, now no one can park in the adjacent spots. (AND YES, I'm talking about our very parking lot here at the radio station!)

6) LOUD cell phone talking, in addition to other major cell phone crimes. My issues on cell phone etiquette go beyond being a simple Pet Peeve, and maybe I shall blog about it sometime, but this includes taking calls while in the middle of a conversation with someone else, and talking about tons of personal stuff LOUDLY in front of other people.

7) Line cutting, and not even bothering to look around and see or ask if there's a line.

8) The gas station, when people don't pull of to the pump furthest to the front. Oh, and add "Line cutting at gas stations". Whoa. That's dangerous stuff there, I don't know why people ever try to pull this off, especially when you're gonna be sitting there next to people you've just pissed off!

9) Not saying "Thank You". Ugh, this really might be my Numero Uno Pet Peeve.

10) While driving, passing on the right, especially when there's no actual lane. What is this, "Create Your Own Turning Lane" Day??

Oh this one bugs me BIG TIME too!!! OK, so that's just 10 to get us all warmed up.

In fact I thought up one more, as you can see by this diagram--->

But definitely if I was ever going to truly use the phrase "My Biggest Pet Peeve is..." then I would say it's #9:

"My BIGGEST Pet Peeve is when people don't say Thank You". And that doesn't just mean, "Thanks for holding the door open", or "I'm good, thanks." I also especially mean when people do big gestures for other people just to be nice, and the other person just simply fails to say Thanks, like it's just supposed to be a given that they're grateful. C'mon. I'm not psychic, so just SAY IT!

(Yes, as you can tell, I am currently PEEVED about something specific, lol.)

So, if you could only have ONE, only one, NUMERO UNO PET PEEVE, what would it be?

What is your Biggest Pet Peeve?

  1. when you tell people someting that went wrong or is bothering you and their response is "that sucks". of course it does, but you don't need to tell me that to make it worse!!

  2. ahahah LOL, omg so true! I do hate when people say that. it's like, "either help me or tell me what to do and if you can't do either, just shut up and go away!" hahahah good call, Anonymous!

  3. Mouth noises. When people chew with their mouthes open, when people pop their gum 100 times in a row, when people lick their fingers and pull out making a loud sucking noise..etc. AHHhhhH! The worst. I do not understand how people do this! How has no one ever told you that that was not okay?

  4. Hahahah, Kimberly V, I used to be a very loud gum-chewer, but I had friends that were kind enough (or cruel, depending on how you look at it) to tell me, "God, Tone. You sound like a cow, quit chewing so loud!!"

  5. That would be me ha I tell people constantly. It's good that you actually listened...most people don't.

  6. I agree, way too many to narrow down, but one HUGE ONE for me, since I answer phones at a hospital is this:

1.CHEWING IN MY EAR! UGH! Nurses do it, Doctors do it, people calling in do it.PLEASE DON't! And no snapping gum either! Loud chewing in general is up on list too!

2.The word ask, we can clearly see it is spelled A S K...not AXE, why is this another word so often pronounced wrong? AND suppose, all forms of it, man oh man that bugs me...You want to stop them mid sentence and say how do YOU spell that word? I hear one person say it all the time like this, "sissasposed" WHAT IS THAT????

3.Drivers that drive up so close behind you you can't see the front of their car, and this of course means they pass on the right only to cut you off and hit their brakes because of course the cars in front are slowing which is why I didn't speed up in the 1st place!

    4. Not saying "EXCUSE ME" If you need to get around me, or in front of me, or whatever, 2 simple words! EXCUSE ME! Or if you run into me with your shopping cart, again, 2 simple words.

    5. Another work related one. IF you call the hospital & would like to see if we have a patient, PLEASE know the last name, 1st name is helpful too.If you ask me for the last name Smith, no I cannot give you the 1st name of every Smith we have to see if ANY of them sound familiar! Do not call me and say "I think the name is" and then when you spell it SO horrendously wrong, and I can't find the person you have the audacity to be upset with me? If this person is so important to you that you call to see how they are, you SHOULD KNOW THEIR FREAKING NAME! A funny story goes with this. I had a gentleman call me late one Friday evening, says to me "my daughter just had a baby, can I check on her?" SO I say hey congrats, sure thing, what's her name? So he gives me a name, to which we have NO ONE with that name, not even close...so he says well maybe it's this name, and he tries another, again, no one. So he tries yet another last name, nowhere near the 1st two, and yes, you guessed it, NO ONE with that name" And since I value my job I cannot say this " LOOK buddy, no offense but if takes you 3 tries to guess your own daughter's last name, and you still don't get it, I am gonna have to surmise she really won't be missing your call!"

  8. omg Deborah, that was AWESOME! I am totally with you on all counts, esp the EXCUSE ME one. As for the dumbies that call up and expect you to know every possible name for every possible patient, it sure must make it hard to answer the next call and be expected to be friendly -- i wish people would think through what they need to say before they call up businesses to ask for information! lol

  9. These are all really good! I can especially relate to the door holding one. That has happened to me several times recently! Although I do have to say that I was holding things in both of my hands when I was coming back from lunch one day last week, and a man outside (smoking), who was not really near the door, walked over to it just to open it for me, so that was very nice (and I thanked him a few times).

    A couple of mine are:

    1. People who stand right in your way, and can see that they're in your way, but don't move, so you have to say "excuse me" and hope that they move, but sometimes they are so rude that they STILL don't move, so you have to do your best to squeeze by them without touching them (because who wants to touch complete strangers??). This just happened to me at a festival over the weekend.

    2. People who don't return their shopping cars to the cart return. I can't stand it! Why are people so LAZY???? The cart return could be 5 feet away, but instead of just walking it over, they will leave it in the parking lot, in the middle of a space. Then people wonder why Americans are so overweight. It's because they're so lazy!

    3. People who use plastic bags for everything. Does nobody care about the environment?? If you're buying a bar of soap, you do not need a plastic bag! Carry it out to the car in your hand. Stick it in your purse. Stick it in your back pocket. Do something with it other than putting it in a big plastic bag! I bring cloth bags with me to the store, and if I forget one for some reason, I carry things in my hands. I'm not saying you can't use a plastic bag if you NEED to, but let's try to conserve, people!

I have a few more, but I don't want to take up a whole page with my rant, lol. I'd just like to say that it would be nice if people were more concerned about other people as well as the environment. Like what is it with drivers not letting other cars in? Do they really think they're going to get to their destination any faster because they didn't let one car go in front of them??

Okay, I better stop, I could go on for a while here! :)

  10. to chime in on holding the doors for people ... i do appreciate when someone holds the door for me .. but only if I am within a few steps of them .. i HATE when people hold the door and make me feel like i have to rush to the door so they are not holding it too long .. yes they are trying to be nice.. but i do not like feeling rushed and i am capable of opening the door for myself. i always just find that weird and aggravating.

  11. That's a really good point, Kimberly, and I totally agree. Thus the "Radius of Closeness", lol. Which is actually a tricky thing to calculate. Like the second person has to be "close enough", bc first of all, if you're the first person, you do kinda look stupid holding the door for so long, and definitely, if you're the second person, it's also like WTF now you're making me rush!!

"Radius of Closness" is a standard of measure that only People With Common Sense seem to know. Which is a shame. lol

And Debbie... feel free! Keep 'em coming! I agree with ALL of yours, and it's a miracle I've withheld from adding any more to mine!!

  12. I have another one! Lol. People who try to run you over while you're walking-in the crosswalk-to go into a store. It happened to me when I went to Target last week. Not just once, but twice! The first time was when I was walking into Target. This man was driving so fast, I stepped off the curb, but saw that he wasn't going to slow down, so I waited for him to fly through. He had Florida plates, but still! It was like he didn't even care that I was there. What was worse was when I was leaving the store. A woman in front of me was crossing in the crosswalk, and a car was coming from the right, going very fast (that's another one-people who drive way too fast in parking lots-there are speed limits for a reason!). I was a few steps behind the woman, and I saw her look at the car and heard her say "whoa," but she got across okay. However, the driver had not slowed down at all, until she came within about a foot of hitting me. NO JOKE. I was so angry and I gave her a dirty look and said "you've got to be kidding me!" She just drove away after I crossed, with no concern whatsoever that she almost hit me. That doesn't usually happen because people usually slow down when they see people in the crosswalk. It wasn't like I was at the curb; I was literally just past the middle of it, almost to the other side. I don't see how being in a rush gives you the right to run people over. Geez.
