Last one to FILE TAXES is a rotten egg...!!!

Every year at tax time, I am scrambling to assemble info so that there's plenty of time left to send it off to My Tax Guy to decipher and perform his magic.

And every year, I swear to myself that I will try and be more organized about receipts and mileage and all that whatnot as the year goes by, so that on December 31st, I AM ALL DONE. Finito.

I wanna get all that business wrapped up and ready to go for when the times comes to send it all out to My Tax Guy. If I stayed on top of keeping this stuff organized every single day (for the most part), by the last day of the year, I shouldn't haven't to look at another receipt again. Easy, right?

And of course, I NEVER DO IT.

I am going to try really hard to pull it off this year. By the time the W-2 arrives in the mail, and all the other miscellaneous statements start trickling in, I want to relax in knowing my part is long over.

I want to be one of those people who always seem to be the first to file taxes, and they're already spending their tax return in February.

Who are you folks that are so diligent about filing so early?

Tell me what your secret... I want to be just like you when I grow up.

  1. Toni,

Leigh Mutert with H&R Block here. I'm not sure that there's a secret sauce. I keep a single file throughout the year. The file isn't very organized, but anything tax goes in the envelope throughout the year. That means I don't have to hunt things down at tax time or miss an item that I don't think of when I'm ready to file. Additionally, I use my company's do-it-yourself software, so I import my W-2 rather than wait for the mailed copy, and that speeds up the process. It may boil down to deciding what you hate more - putting things in your file throughout the year, or filing later because you have to hunt everything down. Personal style, right?
