When Reply-All Goes Wrong...

MAKE IT SSSTTTTTTOPPPPP!!!!I have an email address I use when I sign up for stuff at stores or newsletters, coupons, whatever.

Well, over the weekend, I got unknowingly involved in a Reply-All war that quickly spiraled down into what I can only describe as three dozen women chasing their tails in cyberspace.

Apparently one of the other recipients of one particular store's announcements was fed up with being on a list she didn't remember even signing up for, and decided to REPLY to the vague "subscribe-list" that sent the message.

Get my name off of this list. Is that clear? I did not sign up to
get your trash. One more time and you get reported for theft. Clear?

Well, there must've been an HTML snafu, because that simple (read: short, yet angry) reply was sent to EVERYONE.

And because no one could see anyone else's individual email address, every person who rec'd the reply assumed she was writing to them. Heck, even I was like, "Ew, who is this lady yelling at me? I didn't send her this crap!"

... and then IT BEGAN.

The FLOOD of replies and counter-replies that got sent to EVERYONE:

Hitting "Repy-All" is not going to remove you from this list. I just
unsubscribed by FOLLOWING THE INSTRUCTIONS. Try it!

And stop the emailing!

Here are the instructions for unsubscribing:

To remove your address from the list, just send a message to
the address in the ``List-Unsubscribe'' header of any list
message. If you haven't changed addresses since subscribing,
you can also send a message to:
<###-unsubscribe@company###.com>

Thanks
(and no, I don't work from them. Just tired of getting all your

Yeah, sure was not a good day to be part of this vicious Reply-cycle if you had a Blackberry with a low-battery. Some of the email addresses obviously came from workplaces -- and I mean some of them were fancy schmancy companies -- people with big titles and serious jobs. It was kind of refreshing to see even them fancy folk had a Dirty Jersey side.

Well, it looks like there might've been a mass-exodus for this list! Definitely not a good day for the world of "online marketing". I have never wanted to unsubscribe so quickly. Just a cautionary tale for those of you that send mass emails via lists, or have friends who make you ashamed to ever use "CC: "

And if you also got this email and need help unsubscribing, I can help.

Just don't you dare hit Reply-All!!
